Members and Duties

The governing body is made up of staff, parents, representatives of the Academy Members together with other co-opted appointees.  Those people bring a variety of individual talents and a wealth of experience from within the teaching profession and beyond. As an Academy, Governors may now also be referred to as Trustees because the Academy Trusty is a charity, or as directors because it is a company. The role of the governing board is a strategic one with three key functions:
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.
  • Holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils
  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
Governors set the aims and objectives for the school, agree the policies for achieving those aims and objectives, set the targets for achieving those aims and objectives, monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making towards achievement of its aims and objectives and act as a source of challenge and support to the headteacher (a critical friend).

The whole governing body and its various sub-committees meet on a regular basis. In addition to four Full Governing Body meetings per year, each of the sub committees (Standards and Effectiveness, Community Relations and Resources and Audit) meet a minimum of four times per year.  Governors for these committees are chosen based on their interest and experience in the areas covered by that committee.

School Visits

Governors are encouraged to visit the school during the working day; this allows them a first-hand opportunity to talk to staff and pupils and to witness for themselves the effects of the decisions and policies implemented by them. All of the non-staff Governors are attached to a Faculty and keep in contact with the Faculty Heads and with the work being carried out there.

Training and Support

To keep abreast of new legislation and to maintain and learn new skills, governors are encouraged to attend the variety of training courses that are available to them. New governors are supported by a Governor mentor and are encouraged to attend induction courses. The whole Governing Body sets aside two additional meetings per year to concentrate on joint training objectives.

Lighter Duties

As well as attending meetings there is also a lighter side to their responsibilities. Through the academic year the school organises many events and Governors are invited to these events, their support is always appreciated.
