Tarleton Academy is supported by a very enthusiastic and extremely active governing body. The partnership between the governing body, our Headteacher and the Senior Leadership Team promotes pupil achievement and ensures our students get the best possible education.

Members and Duties

The governing body is chaired by Peter Finch and is made up of staff, parents, representatives of the Academy Members together with other appointees. This mix of people provides a variety of individual talents and a wealth of experience from within the teaching profession and beyond. The whole governing body and its various sub-committees meet on a regular basis and are involved with the administration and decision making. They set strategic direction, polices and objectives, approve the budget and review the academy’s progress against it. They are responsible for admissions, staff appointments, health and safety, challenging and supporting the headteacher and, if necessary, the exclusion of students.

School Visits

Governors are encouraged to visit the school during the working day; this allows them a first hand opportunity to talk to staff and pupils and to witness for themselves the effects of the decisions and policies implemented by them.

Training and Support

To keep abreast of new legislation and to maintain and learn new skills, governors are encouraged to attend the variety of training courses that are available to them. Lancashire County Council (LCC) Governing Services keeps governors informed of essential training opportunities and provides suitable and appropriate courses. New governors are supported by a Governor mentor and are encouraged to attend special induction courses run by LCC.

Lighter Duties

As well as attending meetings there is also a lighter side to their responsibilities. Through the academic year the school organises many social events and Governors are invited to these events and their support is always appreciated.
