Ms D Lund & Mr S Simpson – Joint Heads of History
History at Tarleton Academy is about being an active learner and having lots of opportunities to learn about the past in different ways.
Lessons involve new text books, video, ICT, group and pair work, debate and discussion, creative and dramatic tasks as well as extended written tasks.
We try to have our history re-enactor visit each year to demonstrate first hand about times like The Romans and The Civil War .
We arrange trips to investigate issues such as the Slave Trade, Public Health, the Suffragettes and the 1960s.
These are our big themes for KS3.
Power. Conflict. Empire. Lives of ordinary people. Movement and Settlement of Peoples.
Content focus:
In Year 7 we begin with an induction programme focussing on the skills needed to study history effectively. Then we examine the Roman Empire , conflict and ordinary lives during the Middle Ages and we compare the power of the Tudor and Stuart monarchies .
In Year 8 the topics covered are the empires of Spain and Britain, the Atlantic Slave Trade, Native American Culture and lastly the Industrial Revolution.
In Year 9 the focus is 20th century history. Our topics are Edwardian times and The Titanic, some aspects of World War I/II with a particular study of the Holocaust , and a unit about Crime and Punishment Through Time.
