Mr M Hawksley - Head of Music
Tarleton Music Department has excellent facilities to promote the study of a wide range of music through the media of listening, performing and composing and to enable students to enjoy and appreciate music for life.
Music at Tarleton Academy is time-tabled as a separate discipline. Students receive one hour per week in Year 7 and 8 and two hours in Year 9 and GCSE level. There is one full time Head of Music, Mr. Hawksley. The curriculum is enhanced by a range of peripatetic teachers who offer tuition in brass, piano, woodwind, strings, keyboard, drums, guitar and voice.
The department offers a music education which challenges the able, extends the less able and encourages students to work alongside others with tolerance, co-operation and understanding.
In KS3, students learn about the basic elements of music, use different forms of notation and they listen to music from medieval times up to the present day. Practical skills are developed using new computer technology and keyboards and students are encouraged to take part in group performances, both vocal and instrumental.
Music is available as an option at GCSE following the AQA exam syllabus. They enjoy full access to the music technology and recording studio facilities.
There are many extra curricular activities. Students are also encouraged to form their own groups and are allowed access to the practise facilities both during lunch and after school.
The Music Department regularly puts on productions in conjunction with other departments, hosts Talent Shows, Summer Concerts and other local community events.
