Extra Curricular Activities - English

The English Department offers a range of Extra Curricular activities which serve to enrich our students’ literacy knowledge and support their learning.

We offer a Reading Club in Year 7 and 8 to promote a love of reading. As a part of this we enter the ‘Big Book Quiz’ where we compete against other West Lancashire schools. Also in Year 7 and 8 we provide a peer reading group with Year 10 volunteers supporting our Year 7 and 8 readers. This takes place three times a week at lunchtimes and in tutor time.

For Year 8 and 9 we offer the Debating Society, entering competitions and developing presentation skills. This year our Year 9 team won ‘The Big Debate’ at Runshaw College. We take pride in developing our students’ confidence in oracy.

For Year 10 and 11 we provide both lunchtime and afterschool clinics in which students receive one to one tuition. A GCSE Clinic takes place every Monday and Wednesday lunchtime to develop exam skills and accuracy in writing with Mrs Barlow.

We actively encourage and promote local and national writing competitions within the department. We also invite local writers and theatre groups to the school to enhance our students’ learning experiences. Last year we visited Edge Hill University to watch ‘A Christmas Carol’ and  this year we will be visiting Up Hollands Secondary School for a performance of ‘Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’.
