The English Department offers a range of Extra Curricular activities which serve to enrich our students’ literacy knowledge and support their learning.
We offer a Reading Club in Year 7 and 8 to promote a love of reading. As a part of this we enter the ‘Big Book Quiz’ where we compete with other schools in the West Lancashire District. Also in Year 7 we provide a peer reading group with Year 10 volunteers supporting our Year 7 readers. This takes place three times a week at lunchtimes and in tutor time. This year we have once again taken part in the Premier League National Literacy Trust reading programme where Year 7 boys and girls take part in a 10 week course improving reading skills.
For Year 8 and 9 students we offer a Creative Writing Club to inspire our budding writers, whilst in Year 9 and 10 we have the Debating Society, entering competitions and developing presentation skills.
For Year 10 we offer a Journalists Club and for Year 11 we provide both lunchtime and afterschool clinics in which students receive one to one tuition. A GCSE Clinic takes place every Monday and Wednesday after school to develop exam skills and accuracy in writing with Mrs Barlow.
We actively encourage and promote local and national writing competitions within the department. We also invite local writers and theatre groups to the school to enhance our students’ learning experiences. This year we visited Up Holland High School for a performance of ‘Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’ to enhance students’ GCSE studies.
