The English Department offers a range of Extra Curricular activities which serve to enrich our students’ literacy knowledge and support their learning.
We offer a Reading Club in Year 7 and 8 to promote a love of reading. As a part of this we enter the ‘Big Book Quiz’ where we compete against other West Lancashire schools. Also in Year 7 and 8 we provide a peer reading group with Year 10 volunteers supporting our Year 7 and 8 readers. This takes place three times a week at lunchtimes and in tutor time.
For Year 8, 9 and 10 we offer the Debating Society, entering competitions and developing presentation skills. This year our Year7 and 10 team took part in ‘The Big Debate’ at Runshaw College. We take pride in developing our students’ confidence in oracy.
In Year 10 and 11 we also offer the Journalism Club and Film Studies Club in order to develop our students for prospective careers. For Year 10 and 11 we provide both lunchtime and afterschool clinics in which students receive one to one tuition. A GCSE Clinic takes place every Wednesday after school to develop exam skills and accuracy in writing with Mrs Barlow.
We actively encourage and promote local and national writing competitions within the department. We also invite local writers and theatre groups to the school to enhance our students’ learning experiences.
